Staying safe at a festival

10 Tips on Staying Safe at Festivals

13 May 2024/in Festivals/by Hannah Bateman

With the festival season upon us, it’s time for us music enthusiasts and thrill seekers to start preparing for that unforgettable experience. It’s the ultimate time for celebration and connection! However, whether you’re a festival veteran or a first-timer, these 10 essential tips will help with staying safe at festivals and make the most of your festival experience!

1. Plan Ahead

Before heading to the festival grounds, take the time to familiarise yourself with the event layout, all the exits, and the designated meeting points. Getting lost at a festival by yourself is not fun. Create a meeting plan with your friends in case you get separated, and make sure everyone knows where to meet in the event of an emergency.

2. Stay Hydrated

This is an absolute must. With long hours spent dancing and enjoying the festivities, it’s easy to become dehydrated, especially if you’re in the sun. Bring a refillable water bottle and make sure you drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Whilst you may be planning to consume alcohol, avoid drinking to excess or the festival will no longer be a memorable one! Take regular water breaks throughout to rest and recharge.

3. Dress Appropriately

Festival attire should not only be stylish but also practical and weather-appropriate. Temperatures can vary throughout the day so dress in layers! Don’t forget comfortable shoes that you can dance in for hours on end. Thank us later! As for accessories, bring a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.

4. Look Out for Each Other

Festivals attract some of the largest crowds you’ll see so it’s essential to look out for one another. If you see someone who appears to be in distress or in need of assistance, don’t hesitate to offer help or alert festival staff or security. They would likely do the same for you! In the event you need to contact someone, it is handy to invest in a portable phone charger to keep your devices powered up throughout the day.

5. Secure Your Belongings

Festival-goers have lost some of their most valuable possessions at festivals! So here is a warning to keep your valuables safe – store them in a secure location, such as a locker or a backpack with zipper closures. Carrying large amounts of cash or expensive items is a very bad idea as it could attract some unwanted attention.

6. Pace Yourself

To stay safe at a festival, you also need to pace yourself and listen to your body cues. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of a festival and overexert yourself. Take breaks when needed, and don’t be afraid to step away from the crowd if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Know your limits and prioritise your well-being above all else!

7. Stay Informed

Keep yourself informed about any potential safety hazards or weather-related updates throughout the festival. Stay tuned to official festival channels for any announcements and always follow instructions from event staff or security in case of an emergency. There will be first aid stations and medical tents should you require them – make sure you know where these are.

8. Practice Safe Celebrating

Due to the large crowds at festivals, it is difficult for security to monitor everything, so always look out for friends and fellow attendees, and never accept drinks or substances from strangers. If you feel unwell or experience any adverse effects, alert your friends and seek medical attention immediately.

9. Be Mindful of Others

You will find yourself in close proximity with other festival-goers so be sure to respect their personal space. Avoid pushing or shoving in crowded areas, and be mindful of the impact your actions could have on others. Remember that everyone is there to make memories, so let’s ensure for everyone they are positive ones!

10. Have a Plan for Getting Home Safely

Before the festival begins, make sure you have a plan for getting home safely at the end of the night. Arrange for a designated driver, find out what public transportation will be available, or consider staying overnight at a nearby hotel or camping ground. Never drink and drive and don’t leave anyone behind!

With these 10 tips in mind, you will be ready to embark on a spectacular festival experience. By taking proactive steps to ensure your safety, you can fully immerse yourself in the magic of the festival and create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.
